Elain and I decided to talk about it tomorrow. Inside a silver laptop sat on my desk with a note that said, "I forgot to give it to you."
I stared at it for a moment like it would burst into flames, thinking back to Elain’s computer, but I shook my head to clear it. I needed to know about my family.
I sat down and opened it, downloading a VPN so no one would know it was me. I started by searching my parents' page and was shocked to see nothing out of the ordinary; the same was true for my brother’s page. I was about to click off when I noticed that I was tagged in one of his posts from yesterday, which I responded to.
I went to my page and saw someone wearing my face post selfies with my friends.
The girl looked just like me, even to the scar I have right below my left ear. What was going on? I scrolled through some of my posts and saw that I wrote about how I was sad that Ethan and I didn't work out, but I was happy for him and Charlotte.
WHAT?
I went to Charlotte's page to see that she posted pictures of her and Ethan. Tears started falling before I even knew. I closed the laptop being done for the night. I went and curled up in the bed. What was going on? How could I be in two places at once? Why is this happening to me?
“Might I speak?” one of my ghost voices echoed through my head, making me jump. Every time one of them talks, it sounds like many saying the same thing at once.
“What?” I asked, trying not to sound as frustrated and freaked out as I was.
“My lady,” Another voice said, “I believe you’re dealing with a changeling.”
“A what?”
“A changeling is a creature that takes the form of a human and replaces them. Some associate them with goblins, but they’re actually fairies.”
“How do you know they do this to adults? Don’t they usually replace children?” I asked, thinking back to the fairy tales I’ve read.
“They are well known for doing it to children, but they kidnap anyone of any age. I would know. They did this to me when I was around nineteen, when they took my kingdom from me, and not one person knew,” they said, their voice sounded broken.
“What happened to you?” I asked, and I could feel the sadness wash over me.
“They threw me in the equivalent of this, but it wasn’t as maintained as it is now. I didn't last a week before I was torn apart. I also had no powers as you do, so I stood no chance,” she said, appearing before me in a beautiful green dress with gold trim, with her brown hair pulled back into a bun.
I stared at her, unsure of what to say. I could feel her pain even after all these years; she is still angry and hurt.
“Do not pity me, master. I partnered with the dead walker of the time, and he helped me. My brother saw through the fairy’s magic and believed the dead walker. They freed my kingdom, although it took years, because she had brainwashed a good many of my people,” she stated.
“Was it my ancestor?” I asked, looking into her pale white eyes.
“Of course, my lady. He was extremely handsome, too. If I had had a pulse, I would have sought his hand in marriage.” She smiled, and I couldn’t help but laugh.
“You should get some sleep,” she suggested after I stopped laughing.
“What’s your name?” I asked.
“My lady, once you die, you give up your name. None of your ghosts have names unless you give us one.”
“Why is that?” I asked, wondering why they gave up names and not their memories.
“It's simple because when we die, we are no longer that person; that person is gone. Memories are always there and are forever,” she stated as if it were that simple.
“I see,” I smiled, then thought about it, ”Ava.”
“Why that name?” She asked, staring at me intently.
“I just feel it,” I replied, to which she nodded, accepting that answer. I couldn't believe she accepted that answer, but I was glad cause telling her I named her after my neighbor's dog was embarrassing. Wait, could they read my thoughts? Oh no. I waited to see what she would say but maybe she didn’t. I don’t know.
“Do you know anything about my powers?” I asked, looking at Ava’s feet.
“No, my lady, you would have to talk to your predecessor.” Ava replied.
“How do I do that?” I asked.
“Do you not realize?”
“Realize what?” I asked.
“You can use us to send messages to people. You sent a whole army to another continent.” Ava stated looking at me like I was crazy. I should have thought of this before but she was right. Why didn’t I think of this sooner?
I could send ghost to people so that mean I could use them to spy on people too. I could try and get answers.
I called a few ghost, I sent one to find my aunt and the other to spy on my family and friends. I told them to scan my memories and if they did anything out of the ordinary let me know. I could feel them scanning my memories and it felt like someone was touching my brain, that the best way I could explain it.
Once they did that all the ghost left even the one I sent to find my aunt. I don’t know why that one waited but maybe because I didn’t release him. This is all new I will try to do better.
“Anything else ma?” Ava ask making me jump.
“Oh no, I’m sorry your free to go.” I replied with a smile
“You should get some rest.” Ava said before disappearing into the floor. I decided to go take a shower and try to wash off the day hoping it would take all the bad down the drain.
